Laura Augusta Gainor or as she better known Janet Gaynor (October 6, 1906 – September 14, 1984) was an American actress and painter, born in Germantown, Philadelphia.

Gaynor began her career as an extra in silent films. She was the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performances in movies 7th Heaven, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, and Street Angel. Gaynor received a second Best Actress Academy Award nomination for the original version of A Star Is Born.

She retired from acting in 1939, married costume designer Adrian Adolph Greenburg and became an accomplished painter.
