One of the most sought after actors in Hollywood classic, awarded in 1942, the “Oscar” for Best Actor. At the end of XX century American Film Institute included Cagney ten greatest actors in Hollywood history. It is to him the institution in 1974 awarded its first ever award for outstanding contribution to cinema.

The future actor was born in a family of Irish and Norwegians. In his youth he worked as a waiter, he sang in the choir, played the female roles in the revue. In the mid-1920s. He played in vaudeville with his wife. He noticed first on Broadway and then to Hollywood.
In 1931, Cagney signed a contract with the studio Warner Bros. and he left New York for the “Dream Factory”. His fifth film role was the ruthless gangster in “Public Enemies” (1931) – a film that made stars of the Lady Cagney and Jean Harlow.
Despite maloprimechatelnuyu appearance Cagney successfully embodied in the classic Hollywood type “bad guy”. Husky voice booming this short stack gave inexhaustible reserves of explosive temperament. Throughout his life he struggled to try to force type. His only “Oscar”, he won for the musical “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942).
After a bad experience in the director’s 1957 Cagney began to reduce their appearance in the movie. In 1970-ies. due to health problems, he finally retired from work in the film and wrote a book of memoirs. In 1981, at the invitation of Milos Forman played a small but memorable role in “Ragtime.”
At the funeral of the actor with a heartfelt speech of his old comrade, Ronald Reagan, who called it one of the best actors of America. In the two years before Reagan awarded him the highest civilian honor bestowed in the US – the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
